Stop by and peruse some of my tips and tricks for becoming a more confident, authentic, and prepared public speaker and presenter.
Does the mere thought of stepping onto a stage make your blood pressure rise, your armpits start to sweat, and your breathing get shallow and speed up? You're not alone. Many people struggle with stage fright, and public speaking is one of the biggest fears people have across the board. But the good news is that confidence is a skill that can be cultivated. In this post, we'll explore some simple exercises to help you boost your stage presence and shine like a star.
Stage presence isn't just about what you say; it's about how you say it. It's about commanding attention, exuding confidence, and connecting with your audience on a deeper level. Whether you're giving a speech, presenting a project, or performing on stage, your stage presence can make all the difference in how your message is received.
Research has shown that adopting "power poses" can help boost confidence and reduce stress levels. Before your next presentation, strike a pose: stand tall, with your feet shoulder-width apart, hands on hips, and chin up. Hold this pose for a few minutes to feel the surge of confidence wash over you. Whatever you do, don't spend the precious moments before you go onstage hunched over your phone or notes, making yourself smaller.
Visualization is a powerful tool used by athletes, performers, and public speakers alike. Close your eyes and imagine yourself stepping onto the stage, feeling calm, confident, and in control. Visualize yourself delivering your presentation flawlessly, receiving applause and positive feedback from your audience. As you prepare for your presentation in the days and weeks beforehand, try to imagine the room and the faces. If you can intersperse this visualization with another one, in which you remember a time when you felt calm, in control, and confident, you'll be setting yourself up for success on the day of the event.
It sounds overly simple, but there's a reason people tell you to take a breath if you're nervous. Deep breathing exercises can help calm your nerves and center your focus before taking the stage. Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale deeply for a count of 4, hold your breath for a count of 7, then exhale slowly for a count of 8. Repeat this cycle several times until you feel more relaxed and grounded.
Practice makes perfect, and rehearsing your presentation is key to building confidence. Set aside time to run through your speech or performance multiple times, focusing on your delivery, timing, and body language. The more familiar you are with your material, the more confident you'll feel on stage. Don't forget to practice OUT LOUD. One of the most common mistakes people make is practicing in their head and not getting their body and voice involved.
Affirmations are positive statements that can help reframe your mindset and boost your confidence. Before stepping onto the stage, repeat affirmations such as "I am confident," "I am prepared," and "I am capable" to yourself. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and let that belief shine through in your performance.
With these simple exercises, you can boost your stage presence and exude confidence in the spotlight. Remember, confidence is not about being perfect; it's about embracing your authentic self and owning your space on stage. So, stand tall, take a deep breath, and let your light shine bright for all to see.
